The Flower Fields Spring 2012

After a year of full time RVing I've decided to blog again. For a while I may backtrack on events of the past year. I've collected some great photos to share. We are currently in Southern Oregon at Port Orford. We will hang out here for a couple of weeks and then begin a drive toward San Diego.   I am relearning the ins and outs of the blog, and haven't got a clue about how to get rid of the underlining within the blog.  Oh well....enjoy.

Spring 2012:

Derrille and I attended the "Fields of  Flowers" event that occurs in Carlsbad, CA each spring. It is similar to the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival.  The flowers here are Raniculus. We also went through a  Sweet Pea maze, a rose garden and an exhibit of poinsettias.

                                                Welcome to the Flower Fields!

These gardens are below the fields and contain other kinds of flowers.  The rose garden lies a little north of these gardens.  Snapdragons stately stood tall in several areas.

The many hues of the delphinium created a striking garden near the entrance.

Dirt roads exist up the hillside in several locations and between the rainbow flower rows, to allow visitors to get up close and personal with the flowers.  For those who may find climbing the hill too strenuous, a large wagon pulled by a tractor moves around the perimeter below and above the fields.

The flowers grow in vivid rainbow stripes across the California hillsides. They appear to go on and on for miles.  Much to our surprise the fields are located just a couple of blocks east of I-5.

Poinsettias grow from a small drawf size,
up to 3 feet tall. Some grow on a single stalk, while others grow in clusters. Besides our favorite hot pink color we observed a variey red shades (true red, brick red, orange red, etc) as well as white, ivory and multi-colors.

The event also had horticultural displays, vendor booths, strawberry shortcake, a grill concession and the gift shop of the garden who owns the fields. It was an interesting day.

  1. Beautiful pictures! Have always enjoyed ranuculus, but for some reason no longer grow them myself. And I did not know poinsettias could be so large! Thanks for sharing.
